Stevanato Group History: Over 75 Years of Innovation in the Pharma Industry

From our beginnings in 1949 as a small glassware factory near Venice, Italy, Stevanato Group has evolved into a global leader in drug containment, drug delivery, and diagnostic solutions. We invite you to retrace our steps and discover the key milestones of our history.

Our story begins in Venice

Stevanato Group’s history has its roots in the foundation of Soffieria Stella in Zelarino, near Venice, which specialized in the production of glass bottles. In 1959, the glassware factory moved to Piombino Dese and closed a few years later.

Ompi is born in Piombino Dese

Ompi, the specialist in glass primary packaging, was born in its current location in Piombino Dese, Padua. A few years later, leveraging its in-house technological competencies brought in by Spami, which is dedicated to the production of glass converting lines, the company will develop a unique expertise in the production of high-quality glass primary packaging.

Spami brings engineering expertise

Spami is established in Piombino Dese. Over the years, the Company cemented itself as the global leader in glass conversion manufacturing lines, specializing in the design and production of high-speed, high-precision glass forming lines to obtain high-quality containers from glass tubing.

Expanding our roots in Italy with Alfamatic

Stevanato Group acquires a manufacturing plant for glass containers in Latina, Italy.

Taking our first step outside Italy in Slovakia

Medical Glass, a glass container manufacturing plant based in Slovakia, joins Stevanato Group and marks the first step of the internationalization process.

Changing the market with EZ-fill® Ready-to-Use technology

Start-up of the manufacturing of sterilized glass containers: EZ-fill®.

A new department dedicated to the production of EZ-fill® ready-to-fill, sterilized syringes opens in Piombino Dese. It is soon followed by the opening of dedicated production departments for ready-to-use vials and cartridges.

Entering the visual inspection market with Optrel

The Group acquired Optrel, an Italian company specializing in the manufacture of inspection machines for glass containers for the pharmaceutical industry.

Opening our first production plant in the Americas

Stevanato Group opens its first greenfield site in Monterrey, Mexico.

Bringing our glass manufacturing to China

A new commercial office opened in China in 2012, and a new plant manufacturing glass containers in Zhangjiagang was inaugurated a few years later.

Adding high-speed inspection with InnoScan

Stevanato Group acquires InnoScan, a Danish company that specializes in the production of high-speed inspection systems for complex drugs.

Launching our analytical services in Italy

The Group launched its EMEA Technology Excellence Center at the HQ in Piombino Dese to provide biopharma companies with integrated analytical services to de-risk and accelerate drug product development and commercialization.

Strengthening device assembly with SVM

The Danish company SVM, which specializes in the assembly and packaging equipment of medical devices, was acquired.

Expanding into plastics and devices with Balda

Stevanato Group acquires Balda, a company with manufacturing facilities in Germany and California, specializing in plastic development and manufacturing for diagnostic consumables, drug delivery systems, and medical components.

Growing our footprint in Brazil

A new glass container manufacturing plant, the third greenfield project of the Group, is opened in Sete Lagoas, Brazil.

Moving closer to our Japanese customers

A commercial office to be closer to the local customers has been opened in Nagoya, Japan.

Expanding syringe production in Italy

The Group expanded its premises in Piombino Dese, with a new production plant on an area of 17,000 sq meters for the manufacturing of syringes.

Opening our Technology Excellence Center in the U.S.

US Technology Excellence Center opens in Boston, Massachusetts, to provide Biopharma companies with integrated analytical services and effective project management for drug development and commercialization.

Going public on the New York Stock Exchange

The listing on the New York Stock Exchange represents a significant milestone for Stevanato Group, enabling the company to further strengthen its integrated offerings, expand market penetration across all business segments, and accelerate growth.

Building the future with new plants in the U.S. and Italy

The new facilities in Cisterna di Latina, Italy, and Fishers, Indiana, are expanding the production capacity of drug containment solutions and drug delivery systems, with the aim of meeting the modern challenges of the European and North American markets, while enhancing service to pharmaceutical customers.
